Our family skied in Shiga Kogan in January thanks to Travelplan Skis assistance in advising and booking our trip (thanks Anthea).

We have previously skied in Europe and North America, New Zealand and NSW, but were blown away by the quality of the snow, the carefully groomed slopes and particularly, by the courtesy shown by the staff at Shiga Prince and the Japanese we met on our trip.

Although our room was tiny by usual standards, it was clean and comfortable. Ski and locker hire is available within the hotel so this helped us get onto the slopes quickly with minimal fuss.

We loved the way so many ski fields are interlinked with the one ticket valid for all. Most connect via lifts and runs, but a free shuttle bus is also available. There was plenty of snow and we seem to have a top-up on most nights so the early morning runs were delightful.

Meals at the hotel were adequate but for a change we also ate at the nearby Chinese restaurant and after about a one klm short walk, Indian and traditional Japanese food were available. Here the food was sensational and a much nicer experience.
We found it easy to get around and communicate in spite of our lack of Japanese language, with most signs and announcements repeated in English.

Overall, we heartily recommend skiing Shiga Kogan to all standards of skier or boarder for groups, individuals and families.

Love the Prince East

Written by Marilyn a Skier from Lorne, VIC Australia

The location is excellent, ski in/ ski out to the gondola which is in arguably the best, least crowded ski area in Shiga. The hotel itself is a very comfortable . The rooms are large, separate toilet and bathroom with its own deep onsen bath and shower. There are two king singles pushed together, a sitting area with coffee table, two armchairs and sofa bed. The room is dominated by the picture window with the great view of the mountain. The room has all the amenities needed; hairdryer, fridge, kettle, Japanese tea set, slippers, robe, TV..

Loved walking into the foyer and putting skis and boots in our own ski locker. boots were lovely and warm each morning. Wi fi only available in the foyer which became a meeting place each night with people drinking beer from the vending machine. Small convenience shop had a range of snack food including noodle boxes.

Ski hire was as good here as anywhere. you can swap skis without charge at all Prince hotels. Breakfast was a buffet with lots of choice both western and Japanese. We dinner vouchers, the food was good, though limited choice. You could select from the a la carte menu, no dearer than Australia or have the expensive hoot.

You could catch the bus into Itchinose and eat in the limited number of restaurants there (ethnic Beer House was great) or go to the West .

There was a shuttle between East and West. It was an easy walk along the road into Itchinose from the West  less than a  K.

Staff were helpful and all spoke at least a little English.

Ski the best

Written by Dean a Skier from Sydney, Australia

By writing this review, i realise i am giving up one of Japans best kept secrets, Shiga Kogen. Its off the beaten track from the Aussie hoards, pristine snow, lots of groomed runs with some powder fun to keep you interested.

Bring your family and/or friends and you can create your own fun and have the run of 19 ski resorts more or less to yourselves.

What is not to love about this!
