Furano, in the centre of Hokkaido, is one of Japan’s best snow destinations for skiers and boarders of all abilities. Boasting 170 hectares of mixed terrain, plenty of deep dry powder, and two areas to ski or board from, you can enjoy this mountain from late November right through to mid-March. On and off the snow, Furano has plenty of activities as well as a great après scene to keep you entertained day and night. The apartments, restaurants and facilities can be a little spread out from the ski zones at Furano so book your accommodation carefully.

Kitanomine village is where most of the restaurants and bars are as well as loads of accommodation. However, much of it spreads out from the village centre so be sure to choose wisely – some hotels and apartments require shuttles to and from the ski areas and facilities; others require a walk ranging from just a few minutes to 15 and there is also ski-in-ski-out accommodation. The Furano ski zone has a ski-in-ski-out hotel, and while it is removed from Kitanomine village, there is a shuttle to get you around. There are no shuttles to and from the township of Furano – if you choose to stay here you will need a hire car.Skiing & Boarding

There are two ski and board areas at Furano – Kitanomine and Furano itself – and at the base of each, you’ll find great areas for beginners along with long wide runs to take them to the next level. Kids under 12 ski free. Intermediates and advanced skiers and boarders will find plenty of challenges higher up with a number of perfectly groomed slopes and steeps. If you book in with a guiding company, you’ll love the untracked powder to be found in the side and back country. From Furano it’s easy to find a guide to take you on a day trip to the ski fields of Asahidake, Kurodake, Kamui Ski Links, Sahoro and Tomamu. If you’re heading to Asahidake and Kurodake make sure you are with someone who has experience in the area.Activities

To get to Furano fly into New Chitose Sapporo Airport or Asahikawa airport, which is a closer option and has daily flights from Narita and Haneda. Buses are available to get you to your destination from the airports – Furano is a one hour by road from Asahikawa and three hours from New Chitose. It is also possible to travel by train from Sapporo or Asahikawa.How Far
