Naeba

Naeba Ski Resort is a ski resort on the eastern slope of Mount Takenoko in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture. This ski resort was formerly run by Kokudo, and currently is run by Prince Hotel, which merged with Kokudo in 2006. Naeba Ski Resort is one of Japan’s most accessible and entertaining ski destinations, set in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture and easily reached from Tokyo via the Joetsu Shinkansen. Known for its convenient ski-in, ski-out accommodation, lively resort atmosphere and excellent range of winter activities, Naeba is particularly appealing to families, first-time visitors and skiers looking for a fun Japanese snow holiday without the longer transfers required by some of Japan’s other ski destinations. The resort offers 24 courses across 134 hectares, with terrain for beginners through to advanced skiers and a vertical drop of 889 metres. For those looking for more terrain, the 5.5 km Dragondola connects Naeba with neighbouring Kagura Ski Resort, creating the wider Mt Naeba experience. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, visitors can enjoy night skiing, snow tubing, snowmobiles, the Family Snowland and scenic rides on the Dragondola.

Accommodation Naeba

The standout accommodation at Naeba is the Naeba Prince Hotel, a large ski-in, ski-out resort positioned directly at the base of Naeba Ski Resort. With around 1,200 rooms across several buildings, it offers a wide range of room types and is particularly convenient for families and groups. Many facilities are located within the hotel complex, including restaurants, shops, rental services and hot spring baths, making it easy to enjoy a comfortable snow holiday without needing to travel far after a day on the mountain.

Skiing & Boarding

Naeba offers 24 courses covering approximately 18km of skiing, with terrain suitable for a broad range of abilities. Beginners can take advantage of gentle areas and dedicated family terrain, while intermediates will find plenty of groomed runs to explore across the mountain. More advanced skiers can seek out steeper terrain and ungroomed areas, with the resort reaching a maximum gradient of 32 degrees. The longest run extends for 4km, providing plenty of opportunity to link together longer descents. One of Naeba’s major advantages is its connection to neighbouring Kagura Ski Resort via the 5.5km Dragondola, Japan’s longest gondola. The journey takes around 20 minutes and offers spectacular views across the snowy mountains and valleys. With a Mt Naeba joint lift ticket, skiers can experience both Naeba and Kagura, with Kagura adding higher-altitude terrain and a reputation for excellent powder and backcountry skiing. Naeba also stands out for its night skiing, with selected slopes illuminated after dark during the winter season. This makes it possible to extend your ski day well beyond the usual lift hours and adds to the resort's lively atmosphere.

Activities

There’s plenty to do at Naeba beyond skiing and snowboarding. Families can head to Family Snowland for snow tubing, snow trains, snowmobiles and other snow activities, while the Dragondola provides a spectacular way to experience the winter landscape without needing to ski. After a day on the mountain, unwind in one of Naeba Prince Hotel’s hot spring baths, explore its range of restaurants and bars, or simply enjoy the convenience of staying right beside the slopes. For those looking for a more adventurous experience, guided backcountry skiing and snowboarding are also available around the Naeba and Kagura areas.
