Accommodation Kicking Horse

When you ski or board at Kicking Horse you can choose to stay at either the base area or in the town of Golden, which is just 10 minutes away from the mountain by car.

Kicking Horse base area is right on the mountain and offers a great range of accommodation – from condos and townhouses to lodges – to suit your group and your budget. Choose carefully because some of the condos offer the convenience of being pretty much ski-n-ski-out.

If having a choice of restaurants, bars and cafes is important to you, you may be disappointed by what’s on offer in the base area, however there’s plenty to keep you entertained in nearby Golden. Here you’ll also find a solid choice of accommodation, most of it motel / hotel style.

Skiing & Boarding

Kicking Horse is rugged, raw and ready to challenge you. This incredible mountain spans over 1,100 hectares, and boasts more than 60 long double black runs taking you back to the base area, along with four bowls offering chutes, steeps, deeps and cliffs – it’s the ultimate destination for experts.

With almost half of Kicking Horse dedicated to advanced skiers and boarders, you’ll love the easily accessible runs off the two highest lifts as well as the less tracked runs further out that are well worth the short hike and/or traverse it takes to reach them. There is also plenty of easier terrain at the bottom of the mountain for beginners to get their edges in, as well as some manageable, scenic runs higher up for intermediates.

Feeling more adventurous? If you have the gear and the experience, head to the back country – but before you go check the conditions and warning signs, and while you’re out there, be wary of avalanche danger.

Activities

At Kicking Horse base area, you’ll find a reasonably priced ski school and magic carpets for learners, as well as day care facilities for kids aged 18 months to six years. There are also some great Kid’s Trails at the mountain base to challenge your kids once they get their legs in. If you’re looking to improve on your own style, Kicking Horse’s ‘Big Mountain Centre’ ski program is where you need to be.

Within this small resort there’s plenty to do when you need a break from skiing or boarding. For starters, you can experience ice-skating, snow tubing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on site, while further out, you’ll discover Heli-skiing, snowmobiling, backcountry skiing and even a wolf centre.

Getting There & Around

This growing resort is two and a half hours drive from Calgary International Airport, which isserviced from many Canadian and American cities, or the smaller Cranbrook Airport. Shuttles are available, though extremely limited, and private shuttles are expensive, so it’s best to hire a car. That way you’ll also be able to explore the surrounding areas, like Golden – a 10 minute drive away; Lake Louise which is an hour’s drive and Banff, which is less than two hours by road from Kicking Horse.

Within Kicking Horse, itself you won’t need a car as you can walk or ski to wherever you need to be, however if you’re staying in Golden, you’ll need a car or to rely on taxis.

If you’re making a day trip to Kicking Horse from Lake Louise or Banff, shuttles are available.
