Like many Australians, we tend to head towards Whistler for our skiing, but decided to try Vail since we were closer to Colorado on business. We had a great time!
For intermediate and above, there is more than enough terrain to keep you happy.
It does take a bit more planning than Whistler though, because the endpoint of half of it is at the back of the mountain (no access to the villages).
In terms of accommodation, I would absolutely recommend Lion Square lodge!! Its location is prime- better than the adjacent 5 star properties! We were happy to see that continental breakfast was included during the week. We paid for a valley view room, and automatically got upgraded to a mountain view, complete with our own little patio and a bottle of wine on arrival- love the little touches! The rooms themselves are lovely, all the amenities you would expect.
The only downside of our trip was that, for low-lying Australians, the altitude took a little getting used to- be prepared to feel less fit than you are!
