Aspen Exceeded My Expectations

I was expecting Aspen to be all glam and glitz, with only ordinary skiing, but wow was I wrong!
Flying in and out direct from LA was brilliant as it's only a five minute ride from the airport to the centre of town.
Aspen Square Hotel is very well located, less than 100 metres to the main Aspen Mountain lift. To me it was also more welcoming and genuine then the five star hotels nearby. Our studio apartment was very comfortable with all the mod cons you'd expect and nothing lacking.
Skiing on Aspen Mountain and nearby Aspen Highlands was seriously good. Enough groomers for intermediates but loads of seriously excellent and challenging skiing for advanced and expert skiers and boarders. 30 minutes away by free shuttle bus was Snowmass with a huge variety of beginner and intermediate terrain as well as some more more challenging stuff. We didn't try Buttermilk this trip.
Aspen township was not as pretty by day as I was expecting, but came alive at night with decorative lighting everywhere. Bars and restaurants were buzzing and the food available was very good and cheap in most places we went to. Very different from the huge quantities of stodgy food often served in the US. I was also expecting Aspen to be expensive, but it was just the opposite. Food and drinks seemed significantly cheaper than here in Oz just about everywhere we went.
The major negative to the Aspen region is that to ski the various areas under the Aspen ski pass you need to get a bus, (or hire a car). At least the buses were free, frequent, reasonably uncrowded and clean and the staff were unfailingly helpful and happy. A very successful trip and I'd happily ski there again.
