Indifferent skiing in japan

Written by David a Skier from Sydney, Australia
28/4/2011

Skied 3 areas, Happo 1, Hakuba 47 & Ioweteka.  . good snow depth ,limited new snow. Resorts had a mixture of old & new lifts but overall too many old ,slow 2 seaters. After skiing mainly Colorado over 25 years, with our favourites being Snowmass & Vail, can''t recommend these areas.

Second week was at Shiga Kogen. Better accommodation & lifts. However on day 2 had a slow speed unexplained fall on right side & fractured femur, First major injury i n 62 years  of skiing. Excellent hospital care. Praying I will be skiing next year!

Where the Japanese ski

Written by a from Brisbane

Shiga Kogen is immense. Ten days is hardly enough to explore all of the runs. Despite its proximity to Tokyo lift queues are non-existent except for weekends.Expect a foot of powder every morning and a great variety of terrain. No night life to speak of but so much skiing to do who has the energy? Ski hire is very cheap and great quality but little English is spoken so forget about lessons unless you have a smattering of Japanese. Visit the monkey onsen on your day off or see them observe your technique as you ski the forest trails.
